MCLE Attorney Information

The California State Bar requires members to complete 25 hours of approved continuing legal education ("CLE") every 3 years. Members are responsible for tracking CLE credit earned and reporting their compliance to the State Bar at the conclusion of each 3-year reporting period. The State Bar has divided its members into three compliance groups with a different compliance group reporting each year.

Rule 9.31 provides an exemption from the 25-hour requirement for members who meet the exemption criteria. Exempt members are required to report their exempt status at the conclusion of their designated compliance period.

Members with an official inactive status are not required to fulfill the education requirement for the time period they are inactive. The MCLE requirement is pro-rated for those members who are inactive for only a portion of their designated compliance period.
